Chapter Fifteen

The sun sat high in the sky above Keira when she came out of the restaurant with Kaii. The temperature was nice — not too cold for her to wear a thick jacket, nor too warm for sweat to soak her shirt.

She had a quick look at her watch. "Hurry, honey, we're late for picking up Rugen and Lugen." As she had slept longer than she should have, and Kaii didn't stir her, she was late for the appointment to pick up her pets.

Kaii was placing the small change into his wallet. "Wait," he said. "Why don't we drive there?"

"I want to take them for a walk. It has been a while, and I feel like I have neglected them. Let's go." She hastened her steps without waiting for him.

It was the same route she walked last night, but it was a lot busier now with pedestrians and cars back-to-back on the road.

Kaii ran to her and wrapped his arm around her shoulders. "Slow down."

She pushed his arm away. "Don't rest your weight on me."

"You like it, right?" He pressed harder on her shoulder.

"I'm still tired."

"Then you should rest at home, I can go by myself."

She shook her head. "I'm going with you."

"Talk about last night, how is Erik?"

She stopped shoving Kaii's arm and let it rest on her shoulders. "I don't know."

"Didn't you receive a text from the nurse?"

"I did. But I haven't read it yet."

Kaii stared at her. "Why? I thought you were worrying sick about him."

"I am. I will. Later, when I'm free."

She still couldn't forgive Erik, and reading the text was like reminding her of how Erik betrayed her. All she needed was to forget about the matter, to ease her disappointment and sadness.

When she met Kaii's eyes, he was still in disbelief at what she said. "Maybe after we have brought Lugen and Rugen home, we can visit Erik. Okay?" she added.

Kaii nodded.

She knew she couldn't tell Kaii about this as she didn't want him to do something stupid, like how he threw a punch at a guy who got drunk and touched her when they were on their way back from a bar last year. An impulsive reaction from Kaii wouldn't solve the matter and she needed to know the reasons behind the betrayal. She still had a little hope that she might be able to repair her friendship with Erik.

Half-way to the veterinary surgery, she stopped at the same convenience store where she bought her coffee the previous night. The incident flashed back on her. She walked closer to the kerb and fixed her stare on the park opposite.

Kaii grabbed her and halted her to move forward. "Something wrong?" He looked in the same direction. "Is something there?"

She smiled at him. "Nothing." When she was about to leave, she took a final glance at that place.

A breeze blew and the black string flew up from the bush. It floated for a few seconds before falling back into the bush again.

Her eyes bugged. Her face tightened instantly.
